New Media: Statement of Intent

Untitled – Solo Project by James Fuller

Project Summary

Utilising two super8 projectors on the a single film loop, two different fractured narratives will rotate across a single semi-circular screen from opposite 45 degree angles until the two images conjoin temporarily. They will then rotate back to their original starting positions. The two projectors will be on top of an old table mounted on two record player turntables connected to windscreen wiper motors to control movement. The super8 film itself will be shot on Ektachrome 64T colour reversal and will be about 3 minutes long, 1:30 being dedicated to one narrative and 1:30 to the other. The projectors will play both halves of the film simultaneously. The film(s) will have an amateur home movie aesthetic, containing a main male protagonist in one of the narratives and a female in the other who come in and out throughout the 1 minute 30 seconds respectively, both will seemingly be unrelated to each other but for a moment when the two screens meet. Subtle, composed sound will be playing through up turned speakers on the tabletop.

This project, although heavily based within the realm of film, is a ‘new media’ project; I am producing work using old media with new media techniques. It will build on my previous learning interests both practically and theoretically, exploring themes of nostalgia, redundancy and the individual alongside developing key skills in the application of Arduino, code and electronics. My key aim on this project is to produce an accomplished, well-finished piece to add to my portfolio, it will also help develop my skills and theory for the major project.

The installation will be a performative piece and will be experienced by the viewer as a continuous loop. The timing problems I face when essentially trying to sync two projectors is an element I will probably need to control by exaggerating it, working with it rather than against it. This would then require the loop to be continuously running so that the moment of sync would come at a certain moment within a larger time frame; this would seemingly justify my decision to keep it a strictly performative work. Some changes in speed on the projector via code and servo may be required to regulate this.

Skills Audit

Most of the basic skills required for this project I have already picked up through my previous work, there are some specific areas however, in which I will need to acquire new skills and develop my understanding. One such area is the use of an H-Bridge to reverse the polarity of electric current being supplied to the DC motors to reverse their rotation. Another example is the use of code within the project, a cleaner, more efficient approach will need to be developed to perfect the timing which will be necessary to make the project a success. Working efficiently on a solo project is also a challenge I face, managing this will be critical.

Key References

My research for this project will concentrate mainly on three areas of interest, engaging in critical new media theory concerning the use of installation based work, the individual in modern society and the use of super8 film as a medium. Out of these key areas, the ideas I am investigating within the project will be contextualised and explored; below are some initial sources that have already been of use and many that I intend to follow up.
